Permeability within Basaltic Oceanic Crust

چکیده

Water-rock interactions within the seafloor are responsible for significant energy and solute fluxes between basaltic oceanic crust and the overlying ocean. Permeability is the primary hydrologic property controlling the form, intensity, and duration of seafloor fluid circulation, but after several decades of characterizing shallow oceanic basement, we are still learning how permeability is created and distributed and how it changes as the crust ages. Core-scale measurements of basaltic oceanic crust yield permeabilities that are quite low (generally 10 to 10 m), while in situ measurements in boreholes suggest an overlapping range of values extending several orders of magnitude higher (10 to 10 m). Additional indirect estimates include calculations made from borehole temperature and flow meter logs (10 to 10 m), numerical models of coupled heat and fluid flow at the ridge crest and within ridge flanks (10 to 10 m), and several other methods. Qualitative indications of permeability within the basaltic oceanic crust come from an improved understanding of crustal stratigraphy and patterns of alteration and tectonic modification seen in ophiolites, seafloor samples and boreholes. Difficulties in reconciling the wide range of estimated permeabilities arise from differences in experimental scale and critical assumptions regarding the nature and distribution of fluid flow. Many observations and experimental and modeling results are consistent with permeability varying with depth into basement and with primary basement lithology. Permeability also seems to be highly heterogeneous and anisotropic throughout much of the basaltic crust, as within crystalline rocks in general. A series of focused experiments is required to resolve permeability in shallow oceanic basement and to directly couple upper crustal hydrogeology to magmatic, tectonic, and geochemical crustal evolution.

Continental crust generated in oceanic arcs

Thin oceanic crust is formed by decompression melting of the upper mantle at mid-ocean ridges, but the origin of the thick and buoyant continental crust is enigmatic. Juvenile continental crust may form from magmas erupted above intraoceanic subduction zones, where oceanic lithosphere subducts beneath other oceanic lithosphere. However, it is unclear why the subduction of dominantly basaltic oc...

2. Morphology and Alteration of the Upper Oceanic Crust from In-situ Electrical Experiments in Dsdp/odp Hole 504b

During ODP Leg 111, the drillship JOIDES Resolution returned to DSDP Hole 504B, on the south flank of the Costa Rica Rift. The main objective of Leg 111 was the study of the physical and chemical structure of young oceanic crust in the deepest hole yet drilled into the oceanic crust. In addition to the drilling of an additional 212.3 m into the massive units of Layer 2C, Leg 111 provided the op...

Borehole packer tests at multiple depths resolve distinct hydrologic intervals in 3.5-Ma upper oceanic crust on the eastern flank of Juan de Fuca Ridge

[1] Single-hole hydrogeologic experiments were conducted with a drillstring packer in Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1301B, which penetrates 318 m into 3.5-Ma upper oceanic basement on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Seven constant-rate injection tests were conducted in open hole, with the packer inflated at three depths in the deepest 166 m of the basement section. The pri...

Continental and Island Rhyolites

The production of small volume silicic rocks in areas of oceanic crust is understood with less certainty than the production of silicic rocks in a continental setting. While the anatexis of silicic continental crust produces rhyolites within a continent, it is unlikely to occur in Iceland, an island composed of basaltic oceanic crust. After analyzing rhyolitic samples I collected from multiple ...

The subduction factory: How it operates in the evolving Earth

JULY 2005, GSA TODAY ABSTRACT The subduction factory processes raw materials such as oceanic sediments and oceanic crust and manufactures magmas and continental crust as products. Aqueous fluids, which are extracted from oceanic raw materials via dehydration reactions during subduction, dissolve particular elements and overprint such elements onto the mantle wedge to generate chemically distinc...
